An Overview Of The United States Visa Ban Policy

A citizen from a foreign country needs a US visa when seeking an entry in the united states. There are about 185 visa types. The type of visa depend entirely on the purpose of your visit. Out of these, there are two visas which are considered most important.

The non immigrant visa is for the permanent stay for business, study or tourism. The immigration visa is for people who want to permanently move to the United States. The international travelers can travel to land border crossing, airport or port of USA if they have US Visa.

The DHS and CBP inspector provide permission to enter the US. The US embassy consular officer or consulate abroad verify the status of the applicants for the duration they are going to be in the United States.

Visa Ban Policy

The president of the United States, Donald Trump passed an order on January 27, which stated the temporary ban on the entry of visitors from seven countries - Yemen, Sudan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, and Somalia.

The order was passed stating it was protection for Americans from the threat of terrorism.

The Critics say that this ban imposed on the countries are not the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks happened on the United States in the past years and none of the countries were responsible for carrying out the terrorist attacks - Bombing at Boston Marathon, Shooting at Charleston Church, San Bernardino Shooting Incident, Shootings at Chattanooga, Shooting at Orlando Nightclub and shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport, all of which were done by US citizens, Kuwait born US citizen or Russian citizens.

Key Features

  • The visa ban policy states the 120-day suspension of the US Refugee Admission and an indefinite ban on Syrian refugees.
  • The seven Muslim majority countries also are under 90-day visa suspension ban.
  • The diplomats and the UN members are excluded from this ban.

Why Was It Imposed?

The visa ban was imposed to protect the United States from terrorist attacks done by foreigns till the time some measures are put in place.

This time of ban was to allow the government agencies to have a better system of vetting system so that visas are not issued to the individuals that may pose a national security threat.
